Hunter Johnson
C. Hunter Johnson was born and raised through middle school in Southeast Asia. As a child of a Pan American Airlines manager and a mother who was born and grew up in China where her family had been lay teachers, he was thoroughly exposed to the rich traditions of Thailand, Vietnam and China. Often one hears themes that might be associated with these areas in his compositions. The family moved to Portland, Oregon, where he attended high school. Hunter Johnson performed in jazz stage band, concert and marching band. He also started The Sussex, his own Pacific Northwest rock and roll band, and followed the tradition of playing local venues. He was opening for such groups as Mark Lindsay with Paul Revere and The Raiders and The Fabulous Wailers from Seattle Washington. After graduating, his talents with numerous instruments including guitar, accordion, electronic piano, synthesizer and harmonica, provided access and invitations to play with a variety of different musical groups. He was a regular member and composer in The Kingdomhiers a rock gospel group of the region. Hunter formed the pop trio Sweet Destiny that toured the Pacific Northwest Band Circuit and took the road to Los Angeles and continued working with popular music recording artists. During this period Hunter Johnson did numerous concerts for the Space Shuttle Crews at Edwards Air Force Base as well as the U.S. Navy and Marines. He worked as an independent artist and producer in Funk and Psychedelic Soul at The Masque Studio in Hollywood with Stevie Wonder brother Larry Hardaway. He also produced and performed in the concert back up band for Richard Berry, “The Man Who Wrote Louie Louie”. He composed and recorded with The Clams and opened their California tour with John Sebastian of The Lovin Spoonful at The Troubadour in Hollywood California. Hunter Johnson worked in production developing funk, rock and disco artists at the Burbank Studio Center with Billy Bass Nelson from George Clinton and The Funkadelics. At this time he produced with Funk Producer Kevin Murphy of Rufus and Chaka Kahn, Chicano Soul & Power and Déjà Vu for Warner Bros. FM Records. Hunter took the opportunity to work with “Out Of The Blue” music and television producer Miles Christensen at the original Post Logic Studios in Hollywood. He worked regularly with country music artists The Palomino Riders, J.D. Manus, Steve Duncan of The Desert Rose Band, Jack Daniels, Skip Edwards and the legendary country music impresario-songwriter Cliffie Stone. Hunter Johnson recently composed music for Cherry Lane and Sanrio Music with Richard Sparks including additional projects for Dream Works International and compositions recorded by Jessica Rivera from the Los Angels Opera. He produced his own television music shows on Century Cable for New Music Artists and Art Forms T.V. These shows featured a variety of pop performing artists. Antarctica Suite is Hunter’s most recent recorded composition. The music was inspired by the Antarctica images of artist J. J. L’Heureux. Hunter Johnson works and lives in Venice Beach, California. He is presently editing video footage of J. J. L’Heureux’s and his just completed expedition to circumnavigate South Georgia in the Southern Ocean aboard the Golden Fleece, a 65 foot sloop rigged motor-sailor. He is composing the background music for this video adventure. Several other projects for independent musical artists and an advertising agency are on the studio’s calendar.
